The 2018 Minto Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament will support groups two groups focused on the community’s youth and another celebrating its past.
At the May 8 council meeting council met with delegations from the three groups – North For Youth, Minto Dance Academy and the Canada Packer’s Reunion committee – selected to receive a share of the proceeds from this year’s event, to be held on Aug. 9 at Pike Lake Golf Centre.
North For You provides and co-ordinates services for youth in Minto, Mapleton and Wellington North.
Community youth resiliency worker Gabriella Ieropoli told council the organization would use a portion of the proceeds to help municipalities and local family health teams continue funding her position, which was originally created with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Funds will also assist with “experiential learning” programs for local youth.
Minto Dance Academy director Belinda Wick-Graham said the organization offers “affordable recreational dance programming in an environment that fosters learning and enjoyment.” She said the group will use the funds to enhance its studio space in the lower level of the Harriston Town Hall Theatre.
Canada Packers Reunion committee representative Dave Mallett told council funds will be used to help promote the reunion, planned for Aug. 11 as part of the annual Harriston Street Party.
“It is our goal to try and bring more people to Harriston to gather and to support local businesses and to help the Harriston Kinsmen by supporting their barbecue and the legion by supporting their breakfast,” said Mallett
He added any funds generated by the event beyond those needed for promotional purposes will be donated locally.
“I’m really excited about the three groups this year,” said Mayor George Bridge.
